Education Professors Take Leadership Roles in Literacy Organizations

Roe, who teaches on the Pullman campus, was elected vice president of the Association of Literacy Educators and Researchers. The position puts her in line for presidency of the national organization, whose members include key scholars in the field of literacy education, past and present literacy leaders, researchers, authors, editors of professional journals, teachers, graduate students and publishers.
She also serves on the board of examiners of the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and on the National Middle School Association’s Research Advisory Board. Her research interests include literacy instruction, teaching, and assessment.
Young, who teaches at WSU Tri-Cities, was recently elected to the board of directors of the 85,000-member International Reading Association. The association’s global network supports literacy professionals through a wide range of resources, advocacy efforts, volunteerism and professional development.
Young won the association’s Outstanding Teacher Educator in Reading Award in 2006, and is a member of the WSU President’s Teaching Academy. The focus of his scholarship is literature-based practices in elementary and secondary classrooms. His particular interests are English language learners, struggling readers, content literacy and comprehension.
The professors’ recognition by their peers shows the high caliber of faculty in WSU’s Department of Teaching & Learning, said Judy Mitchell, dean of the College of Education. “It is very impressive for a university to have two people in elected positions on such prominent national and international boards.”
