PULLMAN, Wash.—Edwin M. Tingstad M.D. ‘88 received the Washington State University Alumni Association (WSUAA) Alumni Achievement Award Sept. 5. The award is the highest honor bestowed by the WSUAA, and recognizes Tingstad for his renowned expertise in the field of medicine and his unwavering support of Washington State University and WSU Athletics. Tingstad is the 478th recipient of this prestigious award since its conception in 1970. Tim Pavish, WSUAA, and Jim Sterk and Bill Drake, WSU Athletics, presented the award during the WSU vs. Stanford football game.

Tingstad, a former WSU running back and three-year letterman, graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in history. He excelled both on the field and in the classroom, earning recognition as the College of Arts and Sciences Most Outstanding Senior, a Hall of Fame Scholar Athlete and a member of the PAC-10 First Team Academic. His interest in medicine was sparked when he visited WSU’s anatomy lab on his recruiting visit, and increased as he underwent three surgeries during his four years with the Cougars.

After graduation, he enrolled in the University of Washington School of Medicine, graduating with honors in 1993. His medical school accolades include the Lange Medical Publication Award and the Theodore J. Phillips Award for Excellence. Since 1999, he has served as the team physician and orthopedic surgeon for WSU Intercollegiate Athletics.

As a practicing board-certified orthopedic surgeon, his research and clinical interests include shoulder instability and treatment, reconstructive knee and shoulder techniques, and knee injury prevention. A recognized expert on the anatomy and reconstruction of the knee, he has published a number of journal articles and book chapters and presented at numerous national meetings.

His professional memberships include the American Medical Association, American Board of Orthopedic Surgery, American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (fellow member), and Southern Orthopedic Association (resident member). He was named to the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame and is active in his community as a member of Promise Keepers. In addition to traveling, hiking, fishing, and mountain biking, he enjoys public speaking to community groups with motivational and anti-drug messages. Tingstad lives in Pullman with his wife and three children.
