SPOKANE, Wash. – Washington State University Spokane has been named recipient of the 2009 Excellence in New Communications Award for Academic Microblogging by the Society for New Communications Research. The award was announced late last week at the 4th Annual SNCR Excellence in New Communications Awards gala at the Harvard Faculty Club in Cambridge, Mass.
The SNRC awards program (http://sncr.org) honors innovative organizations that are pioneering the use of social media, ICT, mobile media, online communities, and collaborative technologies in the areas of media, marketing, public relations, advertising, entertainment, education, politics and social initiatives.
The award was presented for the @WSUSpokane account on Twitter. Within a regionally competitive higher education market, and with much larger players in the field of health sciences already on Twitter, the account established an identity for WSU Spokane on Twitter as a knowledgeable and credible source of information on health sciences, health policy, and health professions research and graduate/professional education. The account generated thousands of click-throughs to Web content, mentions and links in other online spaces such as blogs, a growing following including media, and positive trend lines on various measurements of Twitter success.
“WSU Spokane program is an impressive example of the successful and innovative use of new tools, technologies, solutions and practices to enhance communications and relationships,” said Jen McClure, founder and president of the Society.
“It is such an honor to have our work recognized by an international organization that conducts high-level peer-reviewed research on new media and communications,” said WSU Spokane Director of Communications and Public Affairs Barb Chamberlain, who manages the Spokane campus Twitter account. “This wouldn’t have been possible without the support of WSU Spokane Chancellor Brian Pitcher for our communications office work on new communications initiatives, or without the followers who appreciate our content and talk with us on Twitter.”
All the winning case studies submitted to this year’s SNCR awards program will be published on the Society’s website at http://sncr.org.
